Life On Island Time: One Of Our Sunsets

In spite of a lot of complaining about the weather this summer we did enjoy many of these sunsets!

Happiness Is Living On An Island!

It's true. I never knew peace and tranquillity until I moved to an island. I never knew I could actually wallow in relative isolation. Even so, life is never perfect anywhere and here are my main beefs:

1. More often than not it's hard to find tradespeople who consider it good business to return a phone call promptly.

2. People seem to think zoning laws or building codes don't apply to them.

3. Electrical outages are a fact of life, sometimes for days at a time, and we always seem to be among the last to be restored.

4. The local cable company figures it isn't worth it to them to hook us up, & while we can get TV on our satellite receiver they admit their Internet service can be spotty in bad weather.

5. During storms it's best to carry a chain saw to cut a route through trees that may have fallen across the road and that the county hasn't yet had time to clear away.

6. Good restaurants? Figedabout it!

7. It takes forever to get anyplace (including a good restaurant).

8. Ah, yes, and then there's the wildlife. Deer eat tender young shoots from my roses and other plants; raccoons and squirrels figure out a way to get at the bird seed I've put in a 6 foot high squirrel-proof bird feeder; possums nose around for anything miscellaneous that the raccoons have missed; coyotes lie in wait for unsuspecting domesticated animals; feral cats, left by irresponsible people, are a danger to house pets; birds insist on building nests in unlikely places on our house even though we're surrounded by woods that seem much more hospitable; and of course we have the annual spring invasion of carpenter ants, followed eventually by a variety of hornets, all of whom prefer the proximity of our house, burrowing into the ground or the eaves of our house.

Some of that wildlife exists in urban settings, too, but the less people there are, the more abundant the animals.
